Pre-Conference Symposium 2: Designing for Energy Harvesting & Energy Efficiency - Tutorials
Sensors are among the most frequently cited additions to connectivity in the Internet of Things (IoT) and certainly are one of the key enablers for wearable products of all sorts. However, wirelessly connected sensors pose a major problem when considering batteries as the sole source of power - battery life. Converting the available energy from a variety of sources to electricity, or energy harvesting, provides an alternative to frequently changing batteries in wireless sensing applications.

This Pre-Conference Symposium includes information about successful applications of energy harvesting, what it takes for a successful application, what the knockout factors are to avoid pursuing a difficult application, and advancements that have made previous problem applications a possibility. Speakers provide in-depth analysis of the challenges and solutions of using a variety of energy harvesting techniques for powering sensors in wireless and other ultralow power applications. In addition to exploring the energy harvesting technologies and other power sources, speakers address other system aspects including high efficiency, low-power microcontrollers, and wireless connectivity. By explaining the design-in requirements for existing energy harvesting products in real-world applications, attendees leave with new tools to consider in the design of their next-generation sensor systems for the IoT, wearables or any application that requires low power.

This Pre-Conference Symposium addresses the design and manufacturing of sensors and sensor-based systems enabled using paper, plastic and fabric platforms. Speakers, who represent the international “who’s who” in this topical area, present several interesting printed, flexible, stretchable, and functional fabric sensor technologies and their applications currently under development and in production in the commercial sector as well those under development in the leading research universities and research labs around the world.

They also address several other electronic functionalities e.g. batteries, memory/logic and the challenges of their packaging and integration with other functional element of solutions to various applications including Internet of Things and wearables. Pre-Conference Symposium 5: Role of Sensors in Building IoT Systems & Industry 4.0 Applications
Sensors are the key factors for assisting any IoT application and are one of the major hardware components needed to form IoT systems. Gartner reports that “The sensor market will evolve continuously through 2023. New sensors will enable a wider range of situations and events to be detected, current sensors will fall in price to become more affordable or will be packaged in new ways to support new applications, and new algorithms will emerge to deduce more information from current sensor technologies”. According to research from Business Insider, more than 24 billion internet-connected devices will be installed around the world by 2020.

Industry 4.0 is growing at a rapid pace; the economy is on the threshold of the fourth industrial revolution.
Manufacturing industry must address new challenges to data set produced by several sensors in real time. This Pre-Conference Symposium examines how the sensor designer, manufacturers, and vendors can gear up to meet fast and efficient changeover of production processes. Fraunhofer USA will discuss a few use cases an industry consortium is developing open source middleware that allows manufacturers to network and integrate existing sensors, machines, and production processes so that Industry 4.0 applications can be easily implemented and allow for quick, efficient reconfiguration of manufacturing. This Pre-Conference Symposium introduces BaSys 4.0, a German research project focusing on how manufacturing system would be architected in order to reap the benefits of I4.0 as well as an open source software platform that addresses many of the technical challenges related it I4.0 and which can be used to build your I4.0 manufacturing system upon. Industry consortium members include ABB Ltd, Robert Bosch GmbH, Kuka Roboter GmbH, PSI Automotive & Industry GmbH, among others.

This Pre-Conference Symposium provides teaches attendees IoT fundamentals, building blocks, and discover how the sensors can be programmed to interface with IoT hardware cloud platforms and operating systems such as BaSys 4.0 designed by Fraunhofer. It provides the marketing and design aspects needed in integrating smart sensors into IoT framework(s). The agenda is structured to be useful for BD, marketing, designers, architect, hardware engineers and software developers and covers lab sessions to provide demo of a few IoT applications such as home automation, environmental, Agriculture, health care and Industrial 4.0 domains.

Keynote: Engineering Discovery: Building NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope
Since the invention of the telescope over 400 years ago, humans have been building bigger and more powerful telescopes in a drive to better understand our Universe. With the advent of the space age, we have been able to pursue even clearer images of the night sky through space-based observatories, revolutionizing astronomical knowledge. For the past twenty years, engineers and scientists across the globe have been working on a truly audacious next-generation space observatory. When launched, the James Webb Space Telescope will be the largest, most powerful, and most complex space telescope ever built. Its 22 foot-wide mirror and tennis-court sized sunshield will allow us to look back in time to see the first light after the Big Bang.

This keynote focuses on how astronomers’ questions shaped the telescope design, specifically the precision and accuracy required of the telescope and the active sensing and control system in order to perform the ground-breaking science of the Webb mission during in-space operations and on the challenges of building and testing the telescope on Earth prior to launch. Further technology advances in performance, metrology, sensing, and control that will be required for future generations of space telescopes beyond Webb will also be discussed.

This workshop will show you how to use an X-Nucleo IKS01A3 Sensor Board with an STM32L4 Nucleo Board and the X-CUBE-MEMS1 software pack for STM32CubeMX to get started on a new sensor project. The X-Nucleo IKS01A3 Sensor Board features ST newest sensors including LSM6DSO - IMU, LIS2DW12 - Accelerometer, LPS22HH - Pressure Sensor for lower power and improved accuracy and STTS751 – Digital Temperature sensor for on-board temperature calibration in the final application. How to be Safe in an Unsafe World

There are two ways to remain safe in this world, and they have to do with safety and security. How do you thrive in this ever increasing untrusted, unsecure and unsafe world? The IoT is built upon the inter-connected network where things are inherently “untrusted.” One must earn that trust in order to create safe transactions and that goes for embedded IoT devices too. Safety and Security can manifest in several ways, first we can through testing, establish that the device is well documented, and all requirements are established in the code, and there are no lines of code that are not tied to one of the requirements. Second, you can actually tolerate an unsafe environment. Afterall, once it leaves your ethernet controller, it is in the WWW, you know the Wildest Wilderness Wasteland, or the World Wide Web (both are accurate to describe where your data must travel). These clouds services need to understand how to communicate with edge devices, with both safety and security. In this session, we explore the ways in which an unsuspecting datagram can “experience difficulty” along the route to its cloud destination and whatever topology the return messages must traverse. Including how to handle addressing, corruption, delay, repetition, out of order sequence, loss, insertion, and masquerading. We will discuss Asymmetric dataflow where there are many receivers and Symmetric Security, where data is authenticated. Finally we will show how to create robust IoT communication channels where trusted data transfers on the WWW safely and securely.

Walt Maclay covers common bio-sensors used in wearables for remote patient monitoring and how to get medically accurate measurements. Measuring EKG -- Measurement points have to be rather far apart (at least 1½ inches on the chest). That’s a significant issue if the device is too small. It’s particularly difficult to measure EKG on the wrist. Heart rate -- Heart rate is simple to implement in theory, but difficult to measure on the wrist. Measuring the electrical EKG signal requires good contact with the skin, which can be difficult. A more reliable technique is pulse plethysmography or PPG, but there are two types, and the one that is most reliable only works on the fingers or the ears.

The kit features an array of sensors and Wi-Fi to showcase the cloud connectivity features.

Learn the basics of Bluetooth and how the STM32WB conforms to Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0.
