Keynote: Engineering Discovery: Building NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope
Since the invention of the telescope over 400 years ago, humans have been building bigger and more powerful telescopes in a drive to better understand our Universe. With the advent of the space age, we have been able to pursue even clearer images of the night sky through space-based observatories, revolutionizing astronomical knowledge. For the past twenty years, engineers and scientists across the globe have been working on a truly audacious next-generation space observatory. When launched, the James Webb Space Telescope will be the largest, most powerful, and most complex space telescope ever built. Its 22 foot-wide mirror and tennis-court sized sunshield will allow us to look back in time to see the first light after the Big Bang.

This keynote focuses on how astronomers’ questions shaped the telescope design, specifically the precision and accuracy required of the telescope and the active sensing and control system in order to perform the ground-breaking science of the Webb mission during in-space operations and on the challenges of building and testing the telescope on Earth prior to launch. Further technology advances in performance, metrology, sensing, and control that will be required for future generations of space telescopes beyond Webb will also be discussed.

NDIR (nondispersive infrared) based gas sensing solutions continue to evolve; whether to shrink in size, or in price, or to improve in measuring performance, in multifunction, or in energy consumption. This session reviews the current-state NDIR technology and its core components, and from there present some of the evolved design paths taking NDIR gas sensors into many new products and applications. Absorption spectroscopy has always been viewed as a highly accurate measuring technology, but too expensive or poorly fitted for many applications. The paradigm shift with Solid-State optics for NDIR-based gas sensing technologies is the dawning of the next current-state, a sunrise for the air and gas sensors- and data-driven tomorrow.

Looking to add motion and environmental sensors to your next product? This workshop will show you how to use an X-Nucleo IKS01A3 Sensor Board with an STM32L4 Nucleo Board and the X-CUBE-MEMS1 software pack for STM32CubeMX to get started on a new sensor project. The X-Nucleo IKS01A3 Sensor Board features ST newest sensors including LSM6DSO - IMU, LIS2DW12 - Accelerometer, LPS22HH - Pressure Sensor for lower power and improved accuracy and STTS751 – Digital Temperature sensor for on-board temperature calibration in the final application. The Workshop will show how the STM32CubeMX can be used to set up the sensors, log sensor data, optimize sensor configurations and leverage embedded smart sensor functions. Join us and learn how the ST32CubeMX ecosystem can simplify your next sensor design.

This a working session. Participants will need their own laptop running Windows 7 or later, or a MacBook running Windows (Parallels, VM Fusion, etc.). How to be Safe in an Unsafe World

There are two ways to remain safe in this world, and they have to do with safety and security. How do you thrive in this ever increasing untrusted, unsecure and unsafe world? The IoT is built upon the inter-connected network where things are inherently “untrusted.” One must earn that trust in order to create safe transactions and that goes for embedded IoT devices too. Safety and Security can manifest in several ways, first we can through testing, establish that the device is well documented, and all requirements are established in the code, and there are no lines of code that are not tied to one of the requirements. Second, you can actually tolerate an unsafe environment. Afterall, once it leaves your ethernet controller, it is in the WWW, you know the Wildest Wilderness Wasteland, or the World Wide Web (both are accurate to describe where your data must travel). These clouds services need to understand how to communicate with edge devices, with both safety and security. In this session, we explore the ways in which an unsuspecting datagram can “experience difficulty” along the route to its cloud destination and whatever topology the return messages must traverse. Including how to handle addressing, corruption, delay, repetition, out of order sequence, loss, insertion, and masquerading. We will discuss Asymmetric dataflow where there are many receivers and Symmetric Security, where data is authenticated. Finally we will show how to create robust IoT communication channels where trusted data transfers on the WWW safely and securely.

Walt Maclay covers common bio-sensors used in wearables for remote patient monitoring and how to get medically accurate measurements. Measuring EKG -- Measurement points have to be rather far apart (at least 1½ inches on the chest). That’s a significant issue if the device is too small. It’s particularly difficult to measure EKG on the wrist. Heart rate -- Heart rate is simple to implement in theory, but difficult to measure on the wrist. Measuring the electrical EKG signal requires good contact with the skin, which can be difficult. A more reliable technique is pulse plethysmography or PPG, but there are two types, and the one that is most reliable only works on the fingers or the ears.

SA2: Wireless Communication & Localization in Resource-Constrained Multi-Agent Robotic Systems
Microrobotic systems could have a wide range of applications such as search and rescue, agricultural management, and subterranean exploration. Emerging microrobotic systems, such as insect-sized hexapods and postage-stamp-sized ionocrafts will have strict computational limitations imposed by size, power, and weight constraints. These limitations include significantly reduced wireless communication range and limited image processing power. As a result of these limitations, conventional communication and localization methods aren’t well-suited for multi-agent microrobotic systems. Low power wireless sensor networks are a potentially suitable framework for communication due to their very low power consumption, low computational overhead, and support for multi-hop relayed communication. With its modest computational requirements, lighthouse localization could be a viable method of localization for resource-constrained systems. This session discusses the challenges facing localization and communication in microrobotic systems, and distributed localization in robotic wireless sensor networks using lighthouse technology.

At the same time the combination of AI and Sensing must provide safe, hazard-free operations in challenging environments. This session describes how IMUs can be a key sensor to enable safe and reliable AI-based autonomous vehicles and presents a unique MEMS-based component architecture for an open, high-integrity, ISO26262 ASIL compliant IMU platform that is both compact and high-performance. In addition, this session presents how this component architecture can support the safety-compliant integration of additional advanced algorithms such as a Kalman Filter based GPS/INS sensor fusion algorithm directly on top of the IMU hardware processor minimizing overall system cost and size.

A self-driving car will likely need a LiDAR to provide 3D information at a video rate. Designing a functional LiDAR that meets automotive industry requirements is challenging. The presentation first reviews several types of LiDAR, each based either on time-of-flight or frequency modulation principle. Air quality has been linked in multiple studies to various medical conditions and is increasingly in the news. Many agencies, companies and even individuals are installing sensors in an attempt to characterize their air quality. Recent studies and feedback from stakeholders indicate that many of these air quality sensors are not providing accurate information. A lack of standards has led to a flood of sensors with very poor performance and sometimes intentionally misleading readings. This session delves into the main architectures behind airborne particulate sensors: describing how they function, and discussing the particular benefits and limitations of each.
