Liquid sensing and analysis applications using optical methods, including those based on absorbance, fluorescence, luminescence, and backscatter, share several common challenges. System develop encompasses mechanical, optical, electrical, and software integration with the need for rapid prototyping. Technical challenges and mitigations techniques such as ambient light rejection, noise reduction, and calibration are presented. This session discusses how these concerns were addressed during the development of a photometric measurement platform and how the concepts can be extended to varied applications in environmental measurement, safety, and smart buildings.
