The use of lithium cells is growing at a rapid rate, but it is well known that there are reliability and safety concerns with the technology. A battery management system monitors the state of health by externally measuring characteristics such as current, voltage and temperature. However, this approach fails to identify pre-failure events. This session discusses key challenges of in-situ sensing, review architectures and describes a practical approach for constructing intelligent cells.
